TESTING SERIAL ENCODERS

The input functions and testing for the serial encoders are very similar to the quadrature encoders. The user enters the model of the encoder in use, and the TI-5000EX displays the pertinent information. In addition to the count, other important information contained in the data stream is displayed for the operator.

The Data Display will vary in detail among various encoder types and manufacturers due to encoder differences. However, this display provides the same general information to the technician. It allows him to verify that the encoder is basically working, gives him alarm status, and provides information for checking and/or setting commutation feedback alignment on PM brushless servo motors. The sample screen shows a typical Data Display for a Fanuc encoder. It happens to be in the correct position for a +V -U static lockup as indicated by the gray code pattern and the displayed electrical angle.

DATA DISPLAY -
  • Display accumulated pulse count (decimal and HEX).
  • Display 4 commutation gray code bits.
  • Display electrical and mechanical angle for commutation.
  • Display encoder data transfer status.
  • Display various status alarm bits from the encoder data stream.
  • Status can include OVERHEAT, BATTERY, INDEX STATE, INTERNAL ALARM, etc.

  • Serial encoder support also includes a Count Test to provide additional verification of the correct counting ability for the encoder under test. Again this test will vary depending on the particular encoder, but a Fanuc encoder is shown on the sample screen.

    COUNT TEST -
  • COUNT TEST - Turn by hand and compare measured counts per rotation with target number.
  • Check internal alarm bits while the COUNT test is being performed.
